The international paper size standard, ISO 216, is based on the German DIN 476 standard for paper sizes. Using the metric system, the base format is a sheet of paper measuring 1 m² in area (A0 paper size). Successive paper sizes in the series A1, A2, A3, etc., are defined by halving the preceding paper size parallel to its shorter side. The most frequently used paper size is A4 (210 × 297 mm). This standard has been adopted by all countries in the world except the United States and Canada. In Mexico, Colombia and the Philippines, despite the ISO standard having been officially adopted, the U.S. "letter" format is still in common use. Why is the standard paper size in the U.S. 8½" x 11"? Back in the late 1600's, the Dutch invented the two-sheet mold. The average maximum stretch of an experienced vatman's arms was 44". Many molds at that time were around 17" front to back because the laid lines and watermarks had to run from left to right. Sounds big?...well to maximize the efficiency of paper making, a sheet this big was made, and then quartered, forming four 8.5" x 11" pieces. This was well before paper machines dominated hand made paper labor. A couple centuries later when machines dominated the trade (although many hand made paper makers still existed), and the United States decided on a standard paper size, they stuck with the same size so as to keep the hand made paper makers in business. Color

Paper.com has hundreds of different colors. You may search for colors either through this advanced search by simply confirming the color you are interested in, or the ‘search by color’ on the home page. It is important to realize that computer screens do not always illustrate the exact shade of the paper as the physical paper.

Weight

The weight of the paper is the most misunderstand property of paper. The weight of paper is calculated differently for each category of paper. The weight is often compared to thickness and stiffness of the sheet whereby the heavier the sheet – the thicker and the stiffer. Paper.com also expresses weight in grammage (GSM). This Paper.com advanced search will allow you to enter the American weight or the GSM. The weight is defined in pounds per ream (500 sheets) of paper cut to the standard size, generally a folio (parent) size, for that classification / category of paper. The weight is referred to in pounds based on 500 sheets (one ream) of a standard basic size (parent sheet). (I offer 2 attempts above – not sure if either answer clearly…) For example, the standard basic size (parent size) for text papers is 25x38”. A ream (500 sheets) of basis 70 text sheets, in that size, weighs 70 lbs. Weighing 500 sheets of any grade of paper in its proper basic size will determine its basis weight. In other words, 500 sheets of 17x22” 24-pound Bond (our lightest papers) will weigh 24 pounds which is equivalent to the 25X38” 70 pound text sheet described earlier. The basic size for cover papers (our heaviest papers) is 20x26”.

Finish

Paper is produced in dozens of different textures or appearances or ‘feel’ of the surface. The finish of a sheet can range from ultra smooth – coated; to a very rough finish – Cockle. Paper.com has every finish available and this advanced search allows you to search by a specific finish. We outline a few of the more popular finishes – Cast Coated – Ultra High Gloss Finish: High-gloss coated paper manufactured by casting the coating paper against a highly polished, heated steel drum. This is the smoothest paper in the industry. Note: Cast Coated papers will not work in an inkjet desktop copier. Coated – Gloss, semi-gloss, Matte Finish: The surface quality of a coated sheet of paper, related to the flatness of the sheet’s surface, is very smooth and has a clay coating. As a result, the printed image is superior to an uncoated sheet. Most clay-coated papers should NOT be printed on a desktop printer unless specifically approved. Smooth Finish: Uncoated paper finish made even by passing through a variety of rollers yielding a very smooth surface. Paper.com offers many grades with a smooth finish – these tend to print better than other uncoated finishes but not as well as a coated sheet. Vellum, Wove, Felt, and Eggshell Finish: This is a natural or machine finish, which tends to be slightly rough with some ‘tooth’ but still fairly smooth to the feel. The finish somewhat resembles the shell of an egg. Vellum and wove are the most popular finishes. Antique Finish: A subtle, “toothy,” finish of paper typically used in book and cover papers. This sheet is ‘rougher’ than Vellum, Wove, or Eggshell Handmade and Cockle Finish: This surface is very rough and because it is hand made – the surface appearance and finish may be different from sheet to sheet. Sometimes end users refer to finish as textured. Often a mill will produce a paper with a special look and feel to the surface to the sheet. Examples include linen, laid, cockle, columns, grooves, or ridges. These textures are made on the sheet with embossing equipment, which raises or depresses paper texture imparted by an embossing machine. Note, your computer screen my not illustrate the exact texture nor finish as the physical paper.

Uses

Uses Paper can be used for many uses and applications. Paper.com caters to so many different end uses including; home, school, scrapbook, office, and printers. We illustrate a few popular end uses- Inkjet Papers: These papers are used for desktop printers in most office and homes that create images by spraying droplets of ink on the paper. This paper is almost always uncoated and typically is fairly smooth, although any finish will print successfully. Writing Papers: These are uncoated papers suitable for pen and ink, pencil, laser printing or offset printing. Writing grades are designed for letterheads, corporate identity programs, resumes and office copiers. Paper.com generally offers the matching envelope. Scrapbook Papers: Papers for embossing, stamping, painting and dye-cutting.
