Savanna
This fine paper is a tribute to the traditional art of handcrafting cigars in the tobacco growing regions of Cuba. The eleven earthy and harmoniously combined colors come in two textures, matt and structuros. They form an ideal basis for the creation of high-quality and prestigious printed materials.

Screens
For best possible results with offset printing, Gmund typically recommends 130 to 150 line screens. Waterless press printers may elect to run higher line screens according to their particular press characteristics. Gmund recommends proofing on the actual paper stock. The use of a matt surface laminant is recommended. Matte surface laminants are more compatible to the surface appearance of uncoated paper.
Printing
Savanna is suitable for all common printing and finishing processes including silk screening, hot foil stamping and embossing. Savanna's structuros finish is not a traditional felt finish, rather a hard, dense sheet that prints beautifully. Both matt and structuros sheets take pen and ink without feathering.
Due to the superior ink holdout provided by Savanna, inks which dry primarily by oxidation are strongly recommended. When printing large areas of solid ink, increased blanket pressure may be necessary. The structuros finish requires higher impression cylinder loading to produce complete ink transfer. As usual, compressible blankets are recommended for best results.
Ink holdout is so good that set off in the delivery pile will be a problem unless loads are racked. Offset powder will not be very effective with structuros finish, due to the high points in the finish. Set off may also be avoided by controlling ink film density. Longer than average drying times should be allowed before backing up. Fold with the grain direction whenever possible and apply proper scoring techniques.
Both finishes of Savanna are suitable for laser printing, however a trial is recommended.
The surface sizing process used by Gmund, effectively seals the sheet and gives very good ink holdout, whereas a traditional felt finish usually allows ink to readily penetrate. The structuros Savanna sheets are further densified by embossing and allow very little, if any, ink penetration. The matt sheet allows more ink penetration, so an ink which depends on penetration into the sheet as part of its drying mechanism may perform adequately on Savanna matt, but not on structuros.
Proofing is suggested before any print production run.
